Norfolk Island – quintessential island living in the Pacific

Less than three hours flight from Sydney and Brisbane is one of Australia’s closest international destinations - Norfolk Island rises out of the sea just east of Lord Howe and offers days on end of quintessential island living to soothe and satisfy the soul…

Norfolk Islanders are extremely proud of their legacy from the time of the 1856 arrival on the island of the Pitcairners and celebrate this anniversary every year, with dressing up and re-enactments, an entertaining slice of Norfolk Island life! Immerse yourself in its interesting history…

Recent excavations confirmed that Norfolk Island was first settled by East Polynesians in the 14th or 15th Century. The first known European to sight the island was Captain James Cook in HMS Resolution on 10 October 1774.

The Second Penal Settlement established itself from 1825-1855 and Norfolk Island was transformed into a prison isle. In 1788 HMAV Bounty left England on a mission to gather breadfruit trees from Tahiti for the West Indies planters. A startling turn of events, a mutiny and a place of refuge was found at Pitcairn’s Island for Fletcher Christian and his crew.

In 1854 the British Government gave approval for the Pitcairn Islanders to move to Norfolk Island and in June 1856, a community of 194 people arrived on Norfolk Island.
