Of volcanic origin, Lord Howe Island supports exceptional diversity above and below water. The underwater world is home to more than 90 coral species and over 500 species of fish, making it one of the most favourite dive sites in the world. Above, rainforests and palm forests cover most of Lord Howe with the outer islands being home for colonies of nesting seabirds. Hundreds of thousands of petrels, shearwaters, tropic birds, terns, noddys and masked boobies come to breed and raise their young at numerous nesting sites.Lord Howe Island was discovered on 17 February 1788 by Lieutenant Lidgbird Ball, Commander of the First Fleet ship, HMS Supply, en route to Norfolk Island to set up a penal colony. Being close to the Australian coast and a midway point to Norfolk Island saw many government ships sailing past and stopping at Lord Howe. By the 1830s a small permanent settlement was established on the island.
Diving enthusiasts from all over the world, choose Lord Howe Island as favourite with more than fifty dive sites... for beginners there are shallow water dives near the beach, or for the more experienced diver you can find spectacular trenches, underwater caves and volcanic drop-offs... such as Balls Pyramid... a spectacular 550 metre spearhead of sheer, grey basalt cliffs… and that’s above-water, so imagine how stunning it is below! It’s yours for the choosing... the local dive masters can team with you to submerge into this wonderland, alive with Kingfish, Golden Drummers and even Galapagos sharks!
