Coral Seas

This brochure is no longer available on this website.

An archipelago of 83 islands, Vanuatu is located just over 3 hours flying time from the east coast of Australia. The mainly Melanesian ni-Vanuatu population of over 160,000 live in the outer islands, where life has changed little over the years. The capital, Port Vila, is located on the island of Efate and is the gateway to Vanuatu.

Vanuatu is a popular escape for Australians. The main tourist areas around Port Vila offer great watersports activities, round island tours, horseriding, jungle river trips, diving and village visits. Port Vila itself has a wide range of excellent restaurants (reflecting its French influences), as well as duty free shopping and nightlife.

Did you know that

  • The centuries old land diving on Pentecost Island was the inspiration for today’s bungy jumping.
  • Vanuatu has one of the worlds most accessible active volcanos.
  • The worlds only underwater post office lies in a marine reserve just 10 minutes drive from Port Vila.

When in Vanuatu you must

  • Visit the Yasur volcano on the island of Tanna.
  • Dive the wreck of the SS Coolidge off the island of Santo.
  • Take a day trip to Tranquility Island for great snorkelling & swimming.
  • Visit the beautiful cascade waterfalls at Mele.
  • Experience traditional Vanuatu at the Ekasup Cultural village.
  • Land a huge tuna on a game fishing adventure.

Port Vila

Port Vila is the relaxed and attractive capital set on a lovely harbour. It is located on the main island of Efate – why not explore the island?

Air Vanuatu’s ‘champagne flights’ operate from Sydney (3 hours by direct flight), Brisbane (2½ hours) and Melbourne (4½ hours). You’ll enjoy inflight service that has made Air Vanuatu one of the best airlines serving the Pacific. Vanair, using 18 seater aircraft, operates internal flights.
