The 15 islands of the Cook Islands are scattered over some 2 million square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean, in the centre of the Polynesian triangle, with Tonga & Samoa to the west and Tahiti to the east. The capital, Avarua is located on the main island of Rarotonga.
Polynesian Blue and Air New Zealand offer regular flights from the east coast of Australia, via New Zealand, through to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Flights to the outer islands are operated by Air Rarotonga using 18 and 34 seater aircraft.
Rarotonga
The main island of Rarotonga boasts a wide range of accommodation from large resort style hotels to self-catering motel units. A volcanic island which is surrounded by a turquoise lagoon and fringing reef, Rarotonga offers the visitor opportunities for swimming, snorkelling, nature walks, sailing and fishing. This island has a good selection of restaurants and bars offering a choice of different types of cuisine.
Aitutaki
240 kilometres north of Rarotonga (50 minutes flying time) and famous for its large lagoon, Aitutaki receives the most visitors of any outer island. Swimming, snorkelling, sailing and cruising on the crystal clear waters are the highlights of a visit here. Accommodation on the island varies from resort style to basic self-contained units.
Atiu
Atiu is the home of Kopeka, a cave dwelling native swallow and the tumunu, the ritual consumption of a potent “bush beer”. There is limited swimming on the island but there are white sand beaches and picturesque coves to discover. The island is riddled with fascinating limestone caves which can easily be explored with the help of a guide. Visit by day tour or stay a few days.
Mangaia
This is the southernmost island in the Cook Islands group and is surrounded by raised coral cliffs with a series of remarkable rock formations and numerous caves hundreds of metres or more in length. The island has a rich cultural and archeological heritage and is said to be one of the oldest in the Pacific with limestone and volcanic samples dating back 18 million years. Simple accommodation is available at Are Moana Bungalows and Babe’s Place.
Other Islands
The other southern group islands of Mitiaro and Mauke are easily accessed by regular Air Rarotonga flights. Accommodation is generally in guest house style accommodation.
