The northernmost country in South America, Venezuela has a bit to offer every kind of traveller. Thick luscious jungles, white sandy beaches, snow-capped mountains in the Andes and the world's highest waterfall, as well as a culture formed by colonial bonds interwoven with centuries of indigenous tradition make Venezuela a truly absorbing place to travel.
The cities along the northern Caribbean coastline boast both excitement and relaxation in varying doses and just a short flight can take you to Margarita Island or the archipelago of Los Roques, ideal spots for water activities or just lazing your days away on clear blue water beaches.
Cutting through the southern part of Venezuela is the 2150km long, Orinoco River, which feeds the magnificent wetlands of the Delta of the same name, a labyrinth of waterways through pristine jungle and home to the native tribe of the Warao people, who live on stilts among the flood plains.
Caracas
The Venezuelan capital, Caracas lies in a series of valleys 1000 meters above sea level and is surrounded by majestic tree-clad mountains. The city is a wonderful fusion of the old and the new, with traces of the city's colonial roots proudly on show through the historic buildings and in stark contrast to the imposing modern skyscrapers. Caracas has a unique place in the history of Latin America and the independence movement as the birthplace of "El Libertador" Simon Bolivar and you will discover his legacy deeply embedded within the soul of this fascinating city.
Angel Falls
For an awesome spectacle, a visit to Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world should not be missed. Located in the Canaima National Park on the border between Venezuela and Brazil, Angel Falls are the highest waterfalls in the world, nearly one thousand metres high. Named after Jimmy Angel, the American pilot who discovered them in 1937, the falls spill from a plateau into Devil's Canyon, with a drop of more than 800 metres to create an incredible mist of spray at the bottom to feed the Churun River.
