Tour Map of Scotland

Mists rolling over cavernous Glens and Lochs, woolly mountain cattle grazing on rocky hillsides, castles of fame and tragedy towering over their surrounds, fireside whisky's in warm pubs and the haunting sounds of bagpipes drifting on the breeze. Scotland is at once romantic, wild, majestic and characterised by those enterprising and fiercely independent people that Winston Churchill famously declared, "Of all the small nations of this earth, perhaps only the ancient Greeks surpass the Scots in their contribution to mankind." Some of the most spectacular scenery and the UK's highest mountains are to be found in Scotland extending from the English borders, up through the Lowlands and the Highlands, to the Orkney and Shetland Islands.

Your tour is bookended by the two principal cities of Glasgow in the west and the capital, Edinburgh, in the east. Experience amazing train journeys on the scenic railways of Scotland, many built during the very beginnings of the great Railway Age. Visit some of Scotland's iconic castles steeped in history and legend and stay in coastal towns along the way including the northern city of Inverness, and Dundee on the Firth of Tay. Travel over the famous Tay Rail Bridge and cantilevered Forth Rail Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, before arriving in Edinburgh, dominated by its castle dating from the 12th century.

Scotland has some of the UK's wildest scenery and highest mountains and it's all on the menu on board this tour of Scotland by Rail. Led by your experienced UK-based tour leader, you will be staying in quality accommodation, travelling as much as possible by the local trains through wild areas viewing the Highland scenery at a time of year Billy Connolly humorously relates to ... "There are two seasons in Scotland. June and winter."

The Railway Adventures Story

A passion for train travel can manifest itself in many ways and founder and director of Railway Adventures, Scott McGregor, has managed to make much of his obsession over the years. "Travelling to boarding school on the Mudgee Mail gave me a sense of how an active social life and long distance trains can make a good combination." Building a rural retreat out of a collection of vintage railway carriages in the early 1980s gave Scott a new perspective on rail heritage and during this time he also operated his first tour, The Antipodean Renaissance Express, an experience he has never forgotten. Trading in vintage memorabilia and furniture sourced largely from the railways was also a source of great inspiration. Scott travelled far and wide trading and collecting for his Sydney shop, Off The Rails. Being the host of a couple of series of TV documentaries about great train journeys paved the way for tour leading. An enjoyable part-time hobby, "getting paid to do what I love", has, naturally enough, led to a more substantial commitment to great rail journeys and resulted in the launch of this dedicated train travel and touring company.
