Meet the challenge of climbing and trekking on Africa's highest peak...
This detailed brochure presents the varying levels of climbing routes, a description of each and what to expect in terms of complexity, duration and degree of difficulty.
You can decide on which route will suit you best, whether you're an experienced climber or an adventurous beginner. Tanzanian Star Adventures is happy to discuss each option with you and advise accordingly. You'll discover what's involved, what you'll require for your climbing and trekking adventure and how much it costs.
The most popular tourist route is known as "Route Coca-Cola", which many consider the most simple way to make your way to Uhuru Peak. This five-day trip is also the most economical. The route features comfortable huts for overnight stays with beds and mattresses, constant radio contact with the National Park and an exceptionally scenic route.
The Machame Route is what many believe to be the most spectacular. Along the way you'll take in the incredible views of the entire southern turn around Kibo. It should be mentioned that the six-day trip is better suited for physically active travellers, as it includes lengthy and complex transitions than the Marangu route. Set up camp and stay in tents en route.
The Rongai Route is the only route on the northern slopes of the mountain. An additional sixth day on the itinerary gives travellers the unique opportunity to see Mawenzi tarn and the northern amphitheatre of Mawenzi.
If you are attracted to secluded, pristine landscapes, then the Lemosho route to the "Roof of Africa" is the perfect choice. The surrounding forests are rich in big game, including elephants and buffalo; sometimes the first day of the trek is accompanied by an additional ranger. Route Lemosho's duration is seven days - you'll have time to fully enjoy all the highlights.
Route Umbwe, leading to the summit, Uhuru, is shorter but more difficult than the other routes and requires six full days to climb. The region is famous for its caves at Umbwe. The first night you actually sleep at the Umbwe Cave Camp with two more caves that can be visited en route the following day. Also sometimes used as a descending route.
Mount Meru is one of the highest and most spectacular volcano craters in Africa. The route passes through alpine meadows with clumps of trees, mountain forests and vast moorlands. It is home to more than 400 species of birds, plus rhinos, elephants, buffalo and antelopes. The road to the summit is through a narrow pass of barren beauty with incredible views of the crater and Kilimanjaro in the background. Travellers will see the crater, Ngurdoto and Lake Momella, home to thousands of flamingos. This route is physically challenging and suitable for fit and active travellers and you'll be sleeping in huts with minimal amenities.
